Description

Day 1 Monday, October 5

This morning you will meet your group and head out on the road to begin your West Virginia adventure!

Overnight stay in Winchester VA at the Holiday Inn Express – Dinner will be on your own.

Day 2 Tuesday, October 6

Check-out and depart for West Virginia, with our first stop in White Sulphur Springs on Main Street, where you can find lunch on your own and check out their shops!

Next, we will take you on a most unusual history tour of the Greenbrier Cold War Bunker Tour, built by the Eisenhower Administration, it was a Fall Out Shelter for Congress in the event of a Nuclear Attack. This secret facility existed for 30 years, in plain sight, yet hidden from both hotel employees and guests. It’s a fascinating story and you will learn how the pantries were stocked and replenished with fresh produce and supplies. At any moment there was enough fresh water and food here to support the entire House & Senate for 60 days.

Tonight, you will stay in Lewisburg, WV. Followed by dinner and entertainment.  (B,D)

Day 3 Wednesday, October 7

Check-out and head to Cass, WV. For a day of great adventure as you motor north into the Alleghenies, your destination is the townsite of Cass for your first train ride on the Cass Scenic Bald Knob Railroad with a box lunch. The Historical Museum and the Cass Showcase with its diorama and film provide interpretation, then it’s an exciting moment as you board a steam locomotive and pull out of the depot. This was a logging route with grades as steep as 11%, you’ll climb through deep forest with a beauty as old as the hills and then suddenly you will break out above the timber and enjoy a view of West Virginia that is beyond words. You are at Bald Knob the third highest peak in West Virginia. There was a point on the climb that if had been paying attention you would have noticed that you entered a completely different ecosystem because of the change in the tree’s flowers and atmosphere.

Check into the Hampton Inn in Elkins, WV. For a three-night stay. Followed by dinner.  (B,L,D)

Day 4 Thursday, October 8

Depart Hotel for another day of beautiful scenery on the Greenbrier Wilderness Train with lunch included on an excursion into the wilderness of the Greenbrier River Valley. Framed by forested hills on both sides of the river, this remote, rugged, unpopulated region is home to Bald Eagles, Osprey, Black Bear and Coyotes. Next, we will stop off at Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory, a valley filled with giant satellite dishes located in one of America’s most quiet spots. Here scientists are listening for sounds from space, and you will tour the facility.

Dinner included at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Day 5 Friday, October 9

Board coach and head right down the road to board the last train of your trip, the New Tygart Flyer with Box Lunch included. Today’s wilderness excursion is the Tygart Flyer, departing from the town of Elkins. This route features an “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. The vintage diesel-powered locomotive climbs along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls which are accessible only by train. The closest road is literally five miles away. Enjoy the view relaxing aboard our comfortable climate-controlled passenger coaches. Explore the West Virginia Railroad Museum located in the historic Darden Mill in Elkins, West Virginia a city that was built by the railroads. The Mill is on the corner of First Street and Railroad Avenue, two blocks south of the heart of downtown and the old railway depot. The Darden Mill was built in 1902, on land purchased from the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railway Company. It was a grain mill between 1902 and 1943, run first by the Elkins Milling Company then by the Darden Company.

Tonight, you will enjoy the Gandy Dancer Dinner & Show – sit back and listen to the fabulous Mountain Memories Show Band as they serve up a 2-hour Branson-style show with music from the 50’s – today featuring Country, Pop, Motown, Gospel, and Patriotic along with family-friendly comedy and amazing dancers. The Gandy Dancer offers a show that’s guaranteed to have you dancing in your seat, laughing until you cry, touch your heart and give you memories that will last a lifetime. Menu: Italian-marinated chicken breast, chopped sirloin, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, coleslaw, roll, cake and beverage. (subject to change)   (B,L,D)
