Day 1:  Your tour of Cape May will begin on Fisherman’s Wharf. Learn how your seafood gets from the sea to your table and discover how Cape May has become the second largest commercial fishing port on the East Coast. Hear about the history of the harbor, the fishing industry and life at sea.

Next, check into the four-star ocean front Marquis de Lafayette Hotel, serving guests since 1885, this beach front hotel offers bright casual rooms featuring wicker furniture, microwaves and minifridges, as well as cable TV, coffeemakers and free WIFI. Included are private balconies with ocean views and rocking chairs, there is also an outdoor pool, bar and gym.

Dinner tonight will be served at the Lobster House Restaurant, a bustling, harbor front seafood restaurant featuring a full bar, dockside seating and a casual ambiance. A point of fact, the commercial fishing fleet at the restaurant dock offloads and ships millions of pounds of seafood annually and supplies much of the fresh seafood served at the restaurant. During most months, casual dockside dining is an incomparable way to enjoy both the food and extraordinary waterfront view.

Day 2:   Start your day with a full hot breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide in the lobby.

Depart for the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour. Few people know the part that Cape May played in the Underground Railroad. Nor do many know about Harriet Tubman’s presence in the early 1850’s. Enjoy a trolley tour of the places where escaped slaves sought refuge and continued their journeys to freedom. Hear the stories and take a walk in a historic cemetery where the earliest free Black settlers are buried. You will learn how Harriet Tubman earned money to fund her work in Cape May and hear how the city played a pivotal role in the fight to end slavery.

Next, situated in the heart of the city, the Washington Street Mall is the place to go for one-of-a-kind retail, including local clothing stores, home goods shops, bookstores and more. The three-block outdoor shopping district is open all year and sits less than half a mile from the beach. Along the quaint stretch, you’ll find restored Victorian storefronts and brick pathways, as well as whimsical fountains and benches throughout. When hunger strikes, you will have your choice of more than twenty-five restaurants and sweet shops, including the Cape May Fish Market, an Irish Pub and a fudge shop. Lunch is on your own today.

Day 3:  Enjoy another full breakfast at the hotel. Meet you guide in the lobby.

Now its off to West Cape May, which has a history of farming and much more. Learn about the roots of this area, both literal and cultural. Learn about those farmers who produced the mighty lima bean. Find out about the Native American tribes who inhabited this land. You will become familiar with the area’s history, including the whaling industry, and its farms and shops, including accounts of the vibrant African-American Community who lived and worked this area.

Next, set among the serene gardens of the Emlen Physick Estate, the restaurant Vintage offers a touch of fine cuisine in a casual atmosphere for brunch/ lunch. American bistro flair and a menu full of fresh takes on familiar favorites provide plentiful options for everyone, including those in need of gluten-free options. From the Strawberry Cheesecake Waffle and Brie, Blackberry, and Bacon Grilled Cheese, you will be presented with daily and regularly offered seasonal specials. Vintage is located outdoors but is complete with a weatherproof, climate-controlled tent so that you can comfortably enjoy your meal no matter the weather.

Complete your day with a tour and tasting with snacks, at Natali Vineyard. Nestled down a rustic dirt road, you will find a beautiful 23-acre farm growing fifteen varieties of vinifera on three different root stocks. The Cape May Peninsula provides the perfect climate for growing European wine grapes and this vineyard produces award-winning wines from grapes grown in the vineyard.

After your visit to Natali Vineyard and your big brunch/lunch at Vintage, you will have time to re-visit the Washington Street Mall or spend some time on the beach and possibility a dip in the ocean.
