Start at Hagley Museum:
Begin where the DuPont family’s journey got rolling, along the gently flowing Brandywine Creek at Hagley Museum, where the original gunpowder mills still stand, and where the future industrial giant’s story is told in engaging exhibits. Marvel at historic patent models at Hagley’s new “Nation of Inventors” then stroll the gardens and visit the original DuPont family mansion. Box Lunch included upon arrival.
Check in to the Sheraton Suites Downtown Wilmington for a 2-night stay: Dinner included this evening.
Day 2, Wednesday, May 31, 2023
Begin the day in Old New Castle:
Tour the Read House and Gardens, like the rest of Old New Castle, the 14,000-square-foot mansion built for George Read II and his family sits on land once known as Lenapehokink, traditional home of the Lenape people for tens of thousands of years. By the time plans for the house were underway in 1797, the town had passed through Swedish, Dutch, and British colonial control, and it was now the capital of the state of Delaware.
Lunch today included at Jessop’s Tavern, in a circa-1724 building with colonial fare features servers in period costumes, a memorable experience while serving history in Olde City New Castle
Head for Nemours Estate:
A soaring memorial bell tower greets your arrival at Nemours Mansion, a 102-room masterpiece of Gilded Age inspired by Versailles’ , graced with dramatic views of gilded statues and sparkling fountains, 200-acres of formal French gardens, and a Chauffeur’s Garage housing vintage automobiles.
Tonight, dine at the 18th century Columbus Inn, before you retire to the comfort of your hotel.
Day 3, Thursday, June 1, 2023
Start off at Winterthur:
“Spectacular” is the word that comes to mind when visitors first see the beauty and opulence of Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, a place that embraces many wonders: Tour the 175-room mansion, wander the acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, marvel at its unparalleled collection of decorative antiques.
