This morning we depart continuing I-81 enjoying the beautiful scenery and the Appalachian Mountains as a backdrop. Along the way, a perfect place to begin our day this morning at Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia, a “living history” as communicated through costumed interpreters.
Next, we head out to explore Southwest Virginia, located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia, Abingdon is well known as the home of the Barter Theatre, whose alumni include Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine, and Patricia Neal on the most famous stage in Virginia … Abingdon is filled with fun for everyone!
On arrival in Abingdon, Virginia you’ll find that an exciting night of musical history awaits you. Check into your hotel for a two-night stay. Then get ready for the Patsy & Loretta Dinner Show, beginning with Virginia Country Cooking and ends with a Tribute to a pair of Country Music Legends.
This evening’s concert features some of the greatest Country Songs ever recorded. Our tribute to Loretta Lynn, will feature some of her greatest hits such as “Coal Miners Daughter”, “Don’t Come Home a Drinkin’”, “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man”, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl”, ”Silver Threads and Golden Needles”, and many more. You will also enjoy the music of her friend the immortal Patsy Cline with such hits as “Honky Tonk Angel”, “Walking After Midnight”, “Crazy”, “Sweet Dreams”, and “I Fall to Pieces.”
Day 3 – Wednesday, August 29, 2018
Visit the Birthplace of Country Music Museum, a Smithsonian affiliate it is dedicated to the telling of one story only, an event that Johnny Cash called The Big Bang of Country Music.
In 1927 a talent scout for the Victor Talking Machine Company had four men carry a portable recording device into a Bristol hat factory and invited local musicians to record the music of the Appalachians. Through this museum, because of “The Bristol Sessions” the region’s rich music legacy sings loud and proud today. The legendary Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, were among the first artists ever recorded.
After the museum, enjoy free time in Downtown Bristol where State Street separates Virginia from Tennessee. You will find quaint shops, antiques, boutiques, fine art and more. You can take a selfie with the famous Bristol sign, stand in Two States at once, and buy yourself a milkshake at the Burger Bar (rumored to be where Hank Williams ate his last meal).
Then your afternoon highlight is the Bristol Motor Speedway where you do a lap on the high-banked track known as “The World’s Fastest Half-Mile!” You’ll also see Pit Road and the Bristol Dragway known as “Thunder Valley.”
Here at Bristol Speedway, the musical feature is a concert by American Pride Country, performing the music of The Statler Brothers. You’ll hear their tribute song to Johnny Cash, (who discovered them) “We Got Paid by Cash” and many other originals such as “Flowers on the Wall” and “My Only Love.”
Dinner at Bristol Motor Speedway is a catered meal of country favorites served under a tent in the VIP Hospitality Area where you watched the show.
We depart Bristol Motor Speedway and motor to the remote community of Hiltons, Virginia for a special show “Johnny Cash Returns” at the Carter Fold Performance Center, the original Carter Family lived on this hallowed ground. It also honors the memory of the first family of country music, the legendary Carter Family (A.P. Carter, Sara Carter, and Maybelle Carter), whose first recordings (in 1927) are credited with giving birth to the commercial country music industry.
Tonight’s concert is a tribute to Maybelle’s daughter June, and her husband Johnny Cash. Did you know that June Carter wrote “Ring of Fire” in the early 60’s, several years before she married Johnny? You’ll hear songs like “Jackson” and “Long Legged Guitar Pickin Man” as our tribute artists recreate their love and music at the ancestral home.
Note: The Carter Fold is a rustic and eclectic theater with festival seating.
